My Prusa I3 MK2 Dolly clone - Build log / progress report

Post by warren.watts » Mon Jun 11, 2018 7:05 am

I don't know if anyone is even the least bit interested, but here are some pictures of my slowly-coming-together Prusa I3 clone. I will probably be adding pictures and commentary as the build further develops, if anyone is interested.

Image
Raw, unfinished plywood frame and 3D printed parts - I failed to compensate for ABS shrinkage and had to reprint all of the parts shown in this picture. :(

Image
3D printed 8mm thick ABS Y-carriage - It's amazingly rigid, but time will tell if it works out in the long run.

Image
Finally received the smooth rods and LM8UU bearings and was able to (mostly) assemble the Y-axis frame.

ImageImage
Idler pulleys installed in the Y and X axes.

Image
Y-axis belt holder installed.

Image
(Mostly) assembled X-axis gantry

The stepper motors and lead screws are supposed to arrive in tomorrow's mail. If they do, I should be able to complete the Y-axis frame and attach its belt, and screw the Z-axis to the frame with the X-axis attached.

Got some additional parts, made some more progress - It's starting to look like a 3D printer now!
Note that it is just resting on that bottom board, it's not fastened to it.

You can find the MK42 cheap in https://orballoprinting.com/en/home/161-mk42.html and the PINDA https://orballoprinting.com/en/home/178 ... ensor.html
I'm going with a 24V system, so the MK42 bed isn't going to work for me. I've purchased a 24V 200W silicone bed heater and a piece of 240mm^2 4mm thick T6061 aluminum for the build plate, and a 5V inductive proximity sensor for the Z-axis.

OK! I got some more parts over the weekend and made a little progress...

The extruder is now assembled and mounted on the printer:

An overall view of progress:

And I finally got the power supply. Now if the damn spade connector/JST connector/Dupont connector crimping tools and connectors would just arrive, I could start wiring this bad boy up!

I got the PSU base and cap modeled and printed this week - Struggled a little with making the PLA stick in the corners of the 120mmx95mm base. The warping was driving me mad.
ImageImage

I went ahead and let the print finish despite the warping, just so I could test-fit the IEC power socket/switch and the MOSFET module. By the way, I have since shrunk-wrap insulation on those bare mains connectors!
Image

I ultimately solved the lifting/warping issues with "mouse ears" on the corners, and the parts printed beautifully after that.

And finally, the money shot with the PSU in place and the "Dolly" i3 logo painted white

Thumbs up, Warren.

Keep in mind that if there are any printed parts that you aren't totally satisfied with, you will have Dolly to reprint them! Don't laugh, I did just that.

It's ALIVE! No build plate and the extruder isn't wired up yet, but it ran an 1.5 hour piece of gcoode and it didn't fall apart...That's good, right?
