Cheap knock-off bondtech gears?

Post by Wexion » Fri Oct 13, 2017 11:29 am

Hello,

I'm a 3d printer hobbyist and like to improve my cheap Anet A8 with all kinds of upgrades and I like to do that cheaply. But as i was researching new possibilities I thought: "How hard can it be to create a bondtech-like extruder for cheap?" So I went to Alie-express and Ebay to search for cheap bondtech gears, but there wheren't any. I don't have the tools to machine metal myself so I just let the idea go. But still, how can it be that there are fully fledged E3D hotend ripoffs but no single Chinese retailer seems to be able to make a extuder drive gear with an extra gear on it. Is this really far more difficult than I think it is? or is it just because no-one did it?

And I get the fact that we should support the original company that made the thing and that there are copyright and patend issues and everything, but that had never stoped China. Why did it stop them this time? :?

I'd never heard of the mk42, but can I just ask what's up with those mounting holes in the middle? you have to print over there..

PEI sheet goes over the top so you don't even know the holes are there.

I am working on it. I already modified the Prusa MMU to fit a 5mm rod in a With two bearings. I also have 5mm Rods with a flat side. I use mk 8 Extruder gears on both side. This is also working well but the Gearing is the Problem. I have printed gearing but carbon PLA is not strong enough. In the next days a friend will me modify some Metal Gearings.

Maybe you know a better Material to print. It need to be strong and precisely. The gears need to be printed at 0.05 layer height.

I bought a printrbot gear set. The idler has stubby m5 ends. It probably needs to be seated inside some shallow bearings inside the idler. It was $30 with shipping, so not much savings over buying the bondtech.
