Specifically to the original query topic, I chose open build because I worked out that the horizontal rods had to sag as length increased.
More to the underlying thoughts though, I started with a us$149 printer because I didn't know and couldn't afford any better. Now I highly recommend this approach if you're interested in doing your own design anyway. You learn the issues and trouble points along the way and these contribute to improving your design, plus either you will scavenge parts off the cheap printer or use it in building the better one.
On the other hand, I didn't know about alternative designs to basic prusa i3 because that's all I saw when I started the new build.
