RAMPS 1.4 and Mega2650 upgrade problems

Hello everyone,
I just put together and wired my ramps 1.4 and mega2650 for my Anet A8. I used everything from the kit I got except the stepper drivers, I'm using tmc2130s. I'm having troubles though and a really don't know what's going on. At first I had nothing until I plugged the smart controller into my computer, with the lcd lighting up I tried to move the motors but nothing. I swapped the power input to the 5amp and that worked to get the axis motors moving but not the extruder. This also got the hotend and heat bed to heat. I went to home the x axis and found once the carriage hit the endstop switch the lcd disconnected from the computer and restarted. All limit switches cause the lcd to disconnect. Also the z axis seems to move 1mm when I tell it to move .1mm and 10mm when I tell it 1mm and just rams the heatbed when I tell it 10mm, and it moves way faster then before. I don't know where to start with the problems please help.

List of problems:
LCD only lights up when connected to computer
Extruder won't move when prompted
Z axis moves too quickly and too much
Limit switches disconnect LCD from computer
Only seems to work with power to the 5amp positions
No idea where to connect the part cooling fan or hotend cooling fan

I am having problems with the tmc2130 as well, they are not working yet but here's what could be wrong.
Are you using the default pins for communication with the tmc2130 (SDO, SDI, select...) ? Because the LCD and SD card uses some of them as well so there migh be some conflict.

Hi Anthony,

You can connect the tmc's and lcd as usual, they will both work.

  • You will need to change the value for steps per mm for your z-axis. You'll find it in configuration.h of Marlin.
  • Double check your wiring for your end stops, plugging them in wrong can short the board.
  • Your extruder fan runs all the time, so you can connect it directly to the same point as the input from the power supply.
  • The cooling fan is usually wired to the second extruder connection: "D9". Configuration.h has a setting for it, too.
  • The power supply should be connected to BOTH the 11 & 5 amp ports. If the lcd is only lighting up with the USB port, you may be having problems with the 5 volt circuit.

Okay so I've looked into the list you've given me and I did find that the limit switches were on the wrong pins, I had them on the two left most (red and black) when they were supposed to be on the two right most (black and blue). Would this mistake have shorted the board? Once I switched them the limit switches did not disconnect the board from the printer and there was still function on the board. The z axis motors still run too fast and too much with the adjusted steps per mm. The extruder still doesn't do anything. Should I remove the tmc2130 in that position and replace it with another to see if that's the issue? I wired the part cooling fan to the D9 position but nothing happened when I powered on. Was I supposed to change something in the firmware? And finally the lcd still won't light up without the computer plugged in. I wired the psu into both the 11 and 5 amp positions and I don't think that did anything.

Hi JL,

The endstops could have shorted part of the board. The fact that you get the LCD to light when plugged into a computer suggests that the computer is your only source of 5V. The parts cooling fan does need to be configured (see my previous post, above), and will not turn on automatically (requires a gcode command: M106 S255). If the z motor is still running too fast, you need to recalculate your steps per mm, AND be sure you are not using the jumpers underneath the drivers.

Definitely try swapping the tmc's.

If the board was short and there is a possible issue with the 5v circuit is it okay to assume the mega board is okay or do I have to replace both boards?

Unfortunately, I believe the short would be in the Arduino. Maybe someone else could confirm.

Okay so I've gotten the extruder and the part cooling fan to. I also figured out the extruder cooling fan but if I run that all the time the hotend can't heat up and it throws a heat failed error. Is there anyway I can slow the fan down and/or stop it from coming on before the end is at temp? I still can not get the z axis to slow down or move the right amount. Could someone show me what values in marlin I need to be changing to make sure I'm doing the right stuff? And finally the motors will not move in the negative direction at all (not manually or in order to home) how do I fix this? Thank you so much for your help already.

Hi JL,

Post your configuration.h and we'll go through it. If your bed won't home, I suspect there are several parameters we will need to check. We can also slow your extruder fan down, but it should always be on (partly as a safety measure). Maybe adjusting your PIDs will be a better solution.
