Which proximity sensor to use???

Hi, I am building a dolly and I am confused on Which proximity sensor to use.Should I go for M8 or M12 and 5v or 6v-36v?What is the best detecting distance???should it be 2mm/4mm/8mm.Which one should I select???

The M8 5V probe works fine if your surface is aluminum (I use painters tape on top and there's plenty of sensing distance). It won't work if you have glass and a PEI sheet on top.

I tried a 6+V M18 inductive sensor with 12V input and a voltage divider on the output. That was able to sense the bed through the glass and PEI. I wasn't able to get it working well with automatic bed probing, but I was having other trouble so I can't completely blame the probe. (Also, m18 is really big)

Hey guys, I thought I would reply here as I have an issue with my sensor and you might be able to help me a little bit:
I have this sensor https://www.aliexpress.com/item/M8-2mm- ... 74901.html and while it's supposed to be essentially the same as a PINDA (2mm detection distance, made for 5V), the actual minimum distance is a whole lot lower. So low that I did manage to do a few prints, but more often than not my printer's toolhead would catch on the printed object causing layer shifts.
My heated bed is a MK42 clone with leveling dots that I always use for Z calibration so essentially I'm already maxing out the leveling distance as far as possible.
I thought maybe "5V" is just false advertising and increased the voltage up to 10V (and measured the output with a multimeter so not to damage the electronics) but the distance remained spot on the same.
Maybe there's something configuration-wise that I can do or maybe those cheap probes are just crap? I don't know! I would be very glad to hear your experiences and recommendations.
